But I think we are actually becoming extremely refined and skilled consumers. Scrolling daily through pages and pages of content in search of information: social media posts, blog feeds, emails, online magazines and newspapers, search engines etc… Juggling simultaneously our phones in one hand, our laptops in the other and our busy lives around us.

With an increasingly skilled consumer base, that sets us a bit of a challenge; we need to be increasingly skilled presenters and sellers!

We are visual learners

I am a graphic designer and I know some of the basic facts behind using more visuals in our presentations – We are visual learners, we have an instant reaction to visuals (often emotional), our visual memory is better – but I want to know more. I will be updating you on my findings and I’ll be asking for your experiences.

I’m going to be looking closer at visualisation in communication. What is needed to stand out, catch the eye, hold the attention of our viewer/client? What are our options, and why is each one effective or popular.

The first rule of the syntactic theory of visual communication is: WORDS AND PICTURES HAVE EQUAL IMPORTANCE IN THE COMMUNICATION PROCESS.

Storytelling – and Slideshare

To illustrate this, I decided my first piece for #geekgirlmag should be pure storytelling and I have used SlideShare to help tell this story. SlideShare is a sharing platform for business documents, videos and presentations. SlideShare was bought by LinkedIn in 2012, really establishing the product as a business/professional content sharing tool and is rapidly growing in popularity*
It’s a great way to make presentations by mixing graphics, photos and videos with small amounts of text. SlideShare presentations are also easily embedded in websites, Facebook and of course on your LinkedIn.

Jeg vil lægge ud med at se nærmere på visuel kommunikation. Hvad skal der til for at skille sig ud, fange øjet, fastholde forbrugerens/kundens opmærksomhed?

Den første regel er: Ord og billeder er lige vigtige i kommunikationsprocessen.

Til at illustrere dette, har jeg valgt at bruge storytelling til min første artikel for Geek Girl Magazine, og jeg har valgt at bruge SlideShare som medium. Det er en rigtig god måde at blande grafik, foto og video med korte tekster.
Med SlideShares begrænsning på 19 slides, er det ekstremt vigtigt at være omhyggelig i valget af både tekst og det visuelle materiale.

Der skal være fokus på:

  • Indhold og design
  • Læsevenlighed (font og farve)
  • Interessante billeder af god kvalitet
  • Vælg en colour story, der hjælper flowet på vej
  • Rediger, rediger, rediger… (ikke altid nemt)
  • Få altid flere øjne på, for at fange eventuelle fejl eller problemer.
